When starting out on Twitter, it can exist overwhelming when trying to work out how to brainstorm following people – with so many to choose from, who do you follow?  Where do yous kickoff?

There are endless numbers of Twitter tools that will requite you suggestions for who to follow (ie Hootsuite, Sprout Social to name but two).  Merely if you want to drill down a little more into "who" is appropriate and benign for you to follow (and who is more likely to follow back) then here are a couple of quick tips for you to get you going with Twitter! And the best part? Even more than "following" – you will most likely create groovy connections with other Twitter users by using some of the strategies listed in this post.

When finding people to follow on Twitter, there are a number of reasons why you might choose to follow them, including:

  • they are thought leaders in your niche
  • they are your platonic client
  • they produce products and services of involvement to you or your clients, and/or are useful to your business
  • you tin can learn from them or their products and services
  • they are a partner or prospective partner or business associate for your business
  • the person is your friend
  • the list goes on.

We talked near some artistic ways to exist "social" on Twitter in order to attract more thanqualityTwitter followershere. In this post, I desire to talk to y'all about ii more unproblematic ways to find great people to follow.  These are:

#1  Utilise the Twitter Lists of Others

Earlier I first on this, I take to say that I highly, highly recommend that y'all set your own lists on Twitter.  I recently wrote a post about how to ready up and use Twitter Lists strategically and creatively.  Please bank check the mail out hereif you lot are not very familiar with Twitter Lists. It includes some great tips for getting started.

Setting up your own lists does non necessarily mean that they volition fill with peopleapace. How can you start to make full them with people that you follow (and hopefully volition follow y'all back)?  Easy!  Remember of people that fit into the categories in a higher place (or service those categories) and go to their profile.  Start with the thought leaders in your industry.  If you are a writer, yous might go to some accounts of famous authors, or perhaps book publishers.  In my niche, I follow diverse thought leaders in social media. Alternatively, it may be that you go a little derisive and notice the account for your local "contest".  Or perchance follow your local council/shire/sporting organisation/Tourism Function – equally they volition no doubt follow a lot of the local businesses in your expanse.  Use their list to notice local businesses to follow also.  Once you lot have worked out which people are likely to take great Twitter Lists, and so get to their account, scroll down beneath their profile picture and click on LISTS.

Y'all will then see all the lists that the person or company is subscribed to (or a fellow member of).  For example, if you lot looked upwards my business relationship you lot would see the following – all the lists that I accept (a) established (b) subscribed to or (c) take been made a member of by another Twitter User.

Discover the "Lists" of another person or business organization on Twitter

It is a virtual smorgasbord of people to follow!  For example, if you are interested in social media (and I am hoping you are, given that you lot are reading this post) – yous could visit my account, check out who I follow and follow some of those same people. Here are some of the lists that I prepared earlier…feel free to not reinvent the cycle and bank check out some of the cracking people I am post-obit past visiting my business relationship at @sociallysorted.

Why reinvent the wheel? Discover some great lists and utilise them to follow some great people!

For example, if you lot are a budding video marketer, you might visit the accounts of @gideonshalwick or @colliganand@RETrainingVidsand see who they accept saved into lists.  If someone has already made a great list, go and bank check information technology out!  Non everyone uses lists, but for those that do, I am sure they will have some slap-up people for you lot to follow!

#2  Participate in Twitter Chats

What is a Twitter Chatyou may ask?  Well, a Twitter Chat is something that has get very popular.  Basically information technology involves a group of agreeing people getting together to conversation nether a particular "hashtag" on a topic of common interest (at a pre-determined time).  Anybody uses the same #hashtag during the conversation (which usually lasts 1 60 minutes) so that information technology is easy to follow along (and the conversation can be searched on via the designated hashtag).  There are chats on Twitter for near every topic. For example at that place is an #edchat for educational professionals, a #cookingchat and a #TNI (Travellers Night In) for travel enthusiasts…and a whole swag of social media chats.  My favourite social media chat at the moment?#likeablechat from the team at Likeable Media.  If yous are looking for Social Media Chats to follow, I can highly recommend this article fromSocial Fresh about popular Social Media Twitter Chats.

How to Get Chatting?  I would suggest that you find a conversation that resonates with yous and:

  • Search under the hashtag for the chat and meet if yous like the content of previous chats
  • Put the fourth dimension in your diary (bank check world wide web.timeanddate.com if the chat is in another fourth dimension zone – to see if the time suits you.  For 1 of the chats that I do, the US participants are having a lazy Sun night in, while I catch them at morning time tea on a Monday!
  • Join in the conversation and remember to add together #xyzchat (the relevant hashtag) to your tweets
  • Take note of those people that interact with you and retweet or @mention you during the chat – these are peachy people to outset following.

Twitter Chats are a nifty way to detect new people to follow and (in return) yous will get followed by new people likewise. The more than you participate, the amend. Some chats work on one theme for the whole session (ordinarily an hr), others have a invitee "tweeter" who you tin can inquire questions of and will guide the discussion.  I especially like #likeablechat considering they include a series of 5-half dozen questions around a particular theme – participants respond to the questions and information technology actually provides for some engaging conversation and bully social media ideas.

#likeablechat

Likeable Media concord #likeablechat every Sunday Nighttime at 10pm EST – driblet by, say hi and join their social media conversation.

But remember, that although information technology is definitely worth joining a chat with a decent number of participants, you may want to offset with 1 that is smaller, to try information technology out commencement.  Joining a massive Twitter Chat tin can exist overwhelming as yous endeavor to keep upward with the rapid burn down tweets. Have fun finding a chat that suits you!

So, there you have it…two like shooting fish in a barrel ways that you lot can find new, relevant, fun, and sociable people to follow on Twitter – while engaging and encouraging others to follow yous back as well!

Tell me, have you used lists earlier?  If you take, provide the link to a list that you love below (belonging to you or someone else), so that we can all check it out.
